E5, E10, B7 and SDV — what the labels at the pump mean
Confused by the labels on modern UK fuel pumps? Here's a clear breakdown of what E5, E10, B7 and SDV actually are and which one your car needs.
Since 2019 UK fuel pumps have carried European labels showing the biofuel content. E10 (standard unleaded) contains up to 10% ethanol; E5 (super unleaded) contains up to 5%. B7 is standard diesel with up to 7% biodiesel; SDV is super/premium diesel.
The vast majority of petrol cars built after 2011 are E10-compatible, but some classic and older vehicles need E5. Check the government's E10 checker or your owner's handbook if you're unsure.
Diesel drivers rarely need anything other than B7. Super diesels (SDV) contain additional cleaning additives that some manufacturers recommend for high-mileage or high-performance engines.
