What drives UK fuel prices?
Crude Oil Price
Oil is traded in US dollars, so global oil market movements directly affect what you pay at the pump.
Exchange Rate
When the pound weakens against the dollar, the cost of importing oil rises even if crude prices stay flat.
Fuel Duty
Currently 52.95p per litre, fixed regardless of the pump price.
VAT
Charged at 20% on the full pump price including duty, meaning tax accounts for roughly half of what you pay per litre.
Price trend data is calculated from the UK Government Fuel Finder scheme via the Competition and Markets Authority mandatory reporting programme. National averages are calculated across all participating forecourts. FuelTankPal is not affiliated with HM Government or the CMA.
